Our Corporate History
Ocean Garden is a leading seafood importer based in San Diego, California. Founded in 1957, Ocean Garden Products began as a small group of boat owners from Mexico striving to market their harvest of premium Mexican shrimp in the United States. Today that humble association has since evolved into one of the largest seafood companies in the United States and the most recognized brand of premium quality wild and farm raised, “Authentic Mexican Shrimp.” Other products include Latin American, Asian and domestic shrimp, farm raised Atlantic salmon, Mexican lobster tails, Calamari, and canned Abalone.
In 2003, Ocean Garden Products and a binational coalition consisting of Mexican shrimp producers, processors, suppliers and marketers formed the Mexican Shrimp Council (www.mexicanshrimp.org) The Council was established to bring Mexican shrimp to the forefront of the industry and educate seafood buyers, chefs and shrimp lover about the premium quality of Mexican shrimp.
A long time subsidiary of Bancomext, On December 13, 2005 the Mexican Government agreed to sell Ocean Garden Products to a group of agribusinesses based in Sonora, Mexico. Following a closely watched government-run bidding process, the sale was completed in February of 2006 marketing a new era for the 50-year-old company, which has long been a leader in the global shrimp trade. The new ownership group represents a group of companies that have long been involved in either the wild capture or aquaculture of Mexican shrimp.
2007 rings in a new era for Ocean Garden with the celebration of our 50th anniversary in the seafood industry. Our efforts will continue to be concentrated on our premium Mexican shrimp brands and further introduction of our restaurant quality retail products. Far more important that our growth over the years; has been our unwavering commitment to securing and delivering the best possible shrimp products possible One thing that remains unchanged is Ocean Garden’s commitment to quality, sustainability and industry integrity today and in the future.
